Our Overnight Camp Loves Being A Safe Place For Gluten Free EatersJune 3, 2015
I love that our overnight camp is such a safe place for gluten free eaters (and peanut, tree nut, dairy, egg and even mustard free eaters, too!), and has been so more than a dozen years now. When we started accommodating our friends with special dietary needs we really were one of the only places out there doing it. Certainly, we were one of the only sleep away camps.
As I’m out and about in the world I still get so excited when I see businesses that treat people with food allergies and intolerances with kindness and respect. Last Friday my family and I were at the Mendon Drive In movie theater in Mendon, MA. We were blown away when my sister, who has a severe gluten allergy, asked the snack bar if they knew how to serve her safe food…and the manager Julia pulled out this massive binder. It listed the ingredients of every single item on their menu, and even explained how each food was cooked and how they limit the potential for cross contamination. Being able to know that your loved ones with food allergies will be safe and well taken care of while away from home is such an incredibly powerful experience. Kudos to the Mendon Drive In for doing such a great job keeping its customers safe…and for being one of the last remaining drive ins left in the country!
Speaking of food, I was up at Camp this past week and our team of chefs were busy preparing for this summer. For lunch they served a wonderful Mexican feast with homemade corn tortillas, marinated beef, a spectacular spinach and kale salad, and a couple of wonderful homemade salsas. As it always is at our summer camp in New Hampshire, everything was peanut and tree nut free, and there were ample gluten free options available, too!
Current Evergreen camper Betsy and her mom, Nurse Maundey, joined us for lunch and both said that the meal was “totally awesome!” I completely agree and can’t wait to see what other amazing creations our chef team serves up this coming summer!
