We play sports at Kenwood and Evergreen for many reasons. Sports are fun, they are good for your body, and there are important life lessons learned on the court and the ball field. We also play sports because they are a fabulous tool for teaching 21st century skills like determination, teamwork, adaptability and communication. Our goal is not that any of our campers one day turn pro, but rather that each and every one has a solid set of skills to participate however they want in school and town leagues.
Each camp has 4 Core Sports that we want to be a major facet of each camper’s summer. In Kenwood the Core Sports are Baseball, Soccer, Basketball and Tennis, and in Evergreen they are Softball, Soccer, Basketball, and Tennis. Amidst all of the variety in our Structured Choice program, campers will also participate in at least 6 instructional periods of each core sport every 2 weeks. A well-rounded K&E summer includes quality instruction in every thing that we do!
We offer three different levels of team play during the summer: Intramurals, Spirit Days and Tournament Teams. Every camper automatically joins an intramural team that plays against other campers close to their age throughout the summer. Each intramural team has a chance to play baseball/softball, soccer, tennis, basketball, street hockey, volleyball/newcomb, gaga, and archery. In Evergreen we call this Candy Bar League, and in Kenwood it’s called Watermelon League.
Spirit Days also involve every Kenwood and Evergreen camper, but for these events we play sports against campers from other camps. During a Spirit Day campers have the opportunity to play the same sports as in our intramural league, but at a higher level of competition. Thankfully, we are able to play camps that keep this event fun and exciting, without ever devolving into a competition that becomes “win at all costs”. Each year our campers tell us the Spirit Day is one of their favorite events of the entire summer!
Kenwood and Evergreen campers can also be on a myriad of traveling tournament teams, including:
- Flag Football
To be on a tournament team campers must take part in the tryout, and must make a commitment to go to all practices and games. Tournament teams are a great way for our most passionate athletes to have the high level of competition that they crave, while still having a summer experience that includes social and emotional development at its core.
Achieving a proper balance — skill building vs fun, competition vs kindness, technical growth vs social development – takes some very thoughtful, intentional coaching. We invite you to read these profiles of some of our most talented coaches, where they articulate how they meet these varied needs, and why they so loved teaching sports at Kenwood and Evergreen!
