Incredible Summer Camp Leadership Team
To meet our mission we have assembled one of the most experienced camp leadership teams in the country. Combined, we have spent more than 250 years at Kenwood & Evergreen, and more than half of our administrative staff began here as campers. We are more like a family than a group of co-workers, and each of us is dedicated to creating the most intentional, child-development focused overnight camp experience possible.
Scott Brody / Owner & Director
Scott has spent most of his summers growing up at Camps Kenwood & Evergreen. Before having the chance to live his dream and become the Owner and Director in 1996, Scott held a variety of positions at camp, including Bunk Counselor, Unit Leader, Head Counselor & Assistant Director.
Scott graduated from U.C. Berkeley in 1987, and then received his JD from Boston College Law School. Scott recently completed 6 years as the National Vice President of American Camp Association, was an ACA National Board Member for 9 years, served for over ten years on the ACA National Public Policy Committee, and was a member of the 20/20 Vision Task Force. He currently serves on the ACA Non-Cognitive Skills Task Force, and recently authored an article for Camping Magazine entitled “Teaching the Skills that Children Need to Succeed”. In 2006, Scott received both the National Service Award and the Tri-State Award from the American Camp Association for his service to the Camp industry.
Making music with campers and staff at our annual Hollowpallooza concert is one of the many highlights of Scott’s summer at Camp, and playing guitar at night in the bunk and visiting with staff around the campfire are his favorite ways to cap off the day at camp!
Most importantly, he is the father of A.J., who loves second grade and is one of the youngest members of our Camp Community!
Jason Sebell / Director
Deena Sebell / Director of Counseling Services
Jason and Deena have each spent more than twenty five years at Camps Kenwood & Evergreen, and are both the product of Kenwood-Evergreen marriages. Before joining the Camp Administrative Team Jason and Deena were Junior Counselors, Bunk Counselors, Unit Leaders and Head Counselors.
Jason decided to make Kenwood & Evergreen his career when he was eight years old. After graduating from Colgate University with degrees in Sociology and Anthropology, Jason began to work full time for Camp. As a Director, Jason helps introduce families to the Kenwood & Evergreen community through phone calls, summer tours and off-season home visits. He manages our website and produces our many forms of marketing and communication materials. Jason has been a featured speaker at regional and national camping educational conferences for the past 12 years, and is a standards visitor for the American Camp Association.
Deena received her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Binghamton University in New York and her master’s degree and certificate of advanced graduate study in school psychology from the University of Massachusetts-Boston. During the summer, as the Head of Counseling Services, Deena is available for campers and staff who need one-on-one help with the issues that can develop over the course of the summer. She’s a really good listener. When she’s not working at Camp she is the school psychologist and special education chairperson at the Paton Elementary School in Shrewsbury, MA.
Jason’s favorite thing to do at Camp is to play guitar, tell stories to cabins at bed time and go off of the zip line on our ropes course. Outside of Camp he’s in a bluegrass band and plays guitar, piano, banjo, and bass. Deena’s hobby is baking and decorating elaborate cakes for parties. Her favorite moment each summer is when she gets to referee Evergreen’s Jell-O Wrestling. As a former softball player she also loves our Tri-State Softball Tournament, and she really enjoys the time she spends chatting in the bunks when it’s bedtime!
Jason and Deena met at Camp as children and got engaged in front of the entire Camp community at Hollowpallooza ’02. The third generation of this family to attend K & E have arrived in recent years… Deena and Jason have two young sons named Jack and Max. As a family they love going to Comicon and LOTS of rock concerts.
Phyllis Dank / co-Director
Phyllis has spent over 55 summers at Camp Evergreen. In 1951, Phyllis followed her older brother Bob and joined the Kenwood-Evergreen family as a camper. She brought her husband Mickey to Camp when they married, and through the years Mickey worked as a bunk counselor, our legal counsel, and eventually as our Transportation Director until his untimely passing in 2002. Phyllis graduated with a degree in education from Boston University, and went on to teach in the Dover-Sherborn, Massachusetts schools for many years. Phyllis was the Evergreen Head counselor and Assistant Director throughout the seventies, eighties and nineties. When Scott became the owner of Camp in 1996, he asked Phyllis to join him as one of the Camps’ Directors.
Camp Evergreen is such a huge part of Phyllis’ life that her car license plate reads “GREEN&GOLD”—our Evergreen Camp colors. For Phyllis, camp is about smiles, laughter, songs, traditions, and most importantly, the love that we all feel for one another in the Kenwood & Evergreen community.
Phyllis raised her two kids Bryan and Randi at Kenwood & Evergreen, and looks forward to her grandchildren Tyler, Harper, Maya, Van and August growing up at K&E.
David Walsh / Program Director
David began at Kenwood and Evergreen in the summer of 2000 as a General Counselor and within his 1st week as a counselor knew that Kenwood & Evergreen was a place he would call home and turn into a career.
Catherine Hegarty / Business Manager
Catherine’s first summer at camp was back in the summer of 1997. She began working for camp as an administrative assistant for Evergreen the following summer. This part time summer position developed into a part time off season position working directly with Scott in the winter office. More than 15 years later Catherine is now working full time as the Business Manager for Camps Kenwood & Evergreen.
Catherine graduated from Bridgewater State College in 1995 with a BS in Social Work. Catherine’s children grew up at Camp and have since graduated out.
Jacki & Bob Mitchell / Athletic Directors
Jacki joined our camp family at age 5 and and has remained with us for 44 years. After a long career as a camper, she became a beloved counselor, unit leader and has now been Evergreen’s Athletic Director for more than 20 years. Jacki played field hockey, volleyball, basketball and lacrosse in high school, and then went on to play division 1 lacrosse at Loyola, Maryland — for the #3 ranked team in the nation. After earning her B.A. from Loyola she received her J.D. from Hofstra Law school in 1986. During the off-season Jacki has been a Commissioner of SYAC (Syosset Youth Athletic Council) for over 20 years while coaching girls basketball and softball teams of varying ages (5-16). She enjoys coaching our girls’ soccer, basketball and the Tristate softball team each summer. A strength of Jacki’s is being able to motivate the girls to believe in themselves and to try their hardest in everything they do, both on and off the field.
In the summer of 1990, Jacki introduced Bob to camp and he immediately fell in love with it. This will be Bob’s 25th summer, 14 of which he has served as Kenwood’s Athletic Director. Bob has a strong background in sports including having played on a men’s national championship softball team. He is retired from the N.Y.C. police department where he coordinated a youth program providing growth experiences through community service. He then went on to graduate with a B.A. in Education. Bob has enjoyed coaching his town travel teams to numerous championships in softball and basketball. With his background in sports, his life experience as a police officer, and his knowledge as an educator, Bob brings a unique prospective to camp.
Jacki and Bob both share in the belief that sports is an ideal venue to build a child’s self-esteem, regardless of their ability — and that giving of 110% of yourself is a valuable and rewarding experience regardless of the outcome.
Sarah Silverberg / Director of Communications
Originally from Scotland, Sarah has been a part of the Camp family since 2004, working summers as both a general counselor and an office staff member before moving to the US to join the year round leadership team in 2008. Sarah is married to camp alumni Steve Silverberg, and their kids James and Maisie think Camp is the best playground in the world! As Director of Communications, Sarah loves to plan our administrative operations, making sure that our systems run smoothly and our team and wider community can stay in touch all year long!
Courtney Chaloff / Director of Scheduling
Courtney knew Evergreen was for her after taking a tour of camp in 1998 in the pouring rain. After seeing campers have a blast playing softball in a downpour, she was hooked and has been at Evergreen ever since. This is Courtney’s 14th summer at Camps Kenwood and Evergreen. She started as a general counselor, was the senior unit leader for three summers and is now in her second year as the director of scheduling for Camp Evergreen.
Courtney’s favorite things to do at camp are to teach volleyball, join in fun drama periods and catch up with campers at arts and crafts. She also loves seeing the true spirit of Camp come out every Color War. She loves coaching sports and also cheering from the sidelines.
Courtney graduated from Trinity College in 2012, where she played volleyball for four years. She graduated with a BA in Education and now works in special education at a middle school in Newton, MA. After school, she coaches boys and girls high school volleyball.
